Blended Mobility

Blended mobility is a type of mobility activity that combines physical and virtual components, facilitating teamwork and collaboration. In the new Erasmus+ Programme (2021–2027), all types of mobility that were previously carried out only physically can now be implemented as blended mobility, by combining a physical mobility period abroad with a complementary virtual learning component.

There are two types of blended mobility:

  1. Bilateral blended mobility

  2. Multilateral blended mobility (Blended Intensive Programme – BIP)

Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)

  • Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) are short, intensive training or learning programmes that use innovative teaching and learning methods, including online collaboration.

  • BIPs enable higher education institutions to jointly design and deliver group learning, teaching, and training activities for students and staff, incorporating innovative and virtual tools.

Objectives of BIPs

a) Developing international and interdisciplinary curricula
b) Promoting innovative learning and teaching methods
c) Enhancing online/virtual collaboration
d) Encouraging research-based learning
e) Including individuals and programmes that have limited or no access to traditional mobility opportunities

BIPs should add value compared to the existing courses and trainings offered by higher education institutions.

They should:

  • Promote interdisciplinary and international teaching and learning,

  • Take advantage of unique learning/teaching conditions that cannot be offered by a single institution,

  • Ensure transnational participation,

  • Provide participants with a full-time workload,

  • Allow academic staff to exchange ideas on educational content and curriculum development,

  • Offer an opportunity to test innovative teaching methods within an international classroom setting as part of new or joint courses/curricula.

Basic Requirements

  • The physical mobility period must last between 5 and 30 days,

  • A virtual component is mandatory,

  • The programme must correspond to at least 3 ECTS credits,

  • At least 3 higher education institutions from 3 programme countries must participate (additionally, higher education institutions from non-programme countries may also participate, provided the minimum condition is met),

  • There must be a minimum of 15 participants (there is no upper limit, but institutional support funding under the programme is provided for a maximum of 20 participants who travel to the host country).
